Where It All Started

Picture this: You're having the holiday of your lifetime exploring the breathtaking beauty of the Norwegian wilderness, as you embark on a journey through serene forests, stunning fjords, and majestic mountains. You stop by a small lake to take it all in when your suddenly surrounded by motorhomes spewing out black clouds of exhaust and drowning every chance of hearing the sounds of nature.

Now, imagine doing so with the minimal ecological footprint and the soothing silence of electric vehicles.

This vision became my driving force after a life-changing experience in Kenya coupled with my passion for sustainable travel.

In this blog post, I will share the story of how Norway Overland, a company I founded together with my girlfriend, seeks to make traveling through nature in Norway magical and eco-friendly.

Sustainable Awakening:

As I gazed at the magnificent wildlife, I couldn't help but feel dismayed by the sight and sound of motorized safari cars, bustling with tourists. Tailpipe emissions polluted the air, and the noise shattered the tranquility of the environment. It was evident that the magic of nature had been compromised by the unsustainable practices of mass tourism.

This realization was a turning point in my life. I recognized the urgent need for sustainable and responsible travel experiences that allow people to connect with nature without harming it. The experience in Kenya served as a catalyst for my desire to create a sustainable alternative for those seeking to explore the pristine landscapes of Norway.

A Kenyan Awakening:

My connection to the wonders of nature and overland travel was rooted in my childhood. From 1984 to 1986, I lived in Kenya with my family as my father worked with the organization Save the Children. We crisscrossed the country in a Land Cruiser, seeking out Save the Children's projects, and living a nomadic life. This formative experience etched a deep love for overland adventures and a profound respect for the natural world in my heart.

Over the years, my connection to Kenya persisted. I established close friendships and continued to support projects in the country.

However, my most recent trip to Kenya with my family was an eye-opener. I was confronted with the stark contrast between the enchanting natural beauty of Kenya and the environmental challenges posed by traditional modes of tourism as the industri had grown.

After coming back to Norway, joyful from all our wonderful experiences in Kenya, I suddenly had an epiphany while out running, about how we could change the travel industri to become more sustainable. I shared my thoughts with my girlfriend as soon as I came home, and she actually loved my idea, for once!

Norway Overland: A Vision Takes Shape:

With this newfound vision in mind, we decided to establish Norway Overland. The goal was to offer travelers a unique opportunity to experience the natural wonders of Norway in an eco-friendly, enchanting, and respectful way.

Our solution was to design and rent out eco-friendly electric safari vehicles. These vehicles would blend seamlessly with the Norwegian landscape while eliminating tailpipe emissions and minimizing noise pollution. Travelers could experience the enchanting beauty of Norway's wilderness without compromising the environment.

The challenge was that this had never been done before and the vehicles we needed didn't exist yet!

But after heavy pondering and by a stroke of good luck, a company named Maxus was just about to release their first electric pickup (Maxus T90EV) in Norway. These pickups would be perfect for the challenge, both in size and durability.

Deciding at an early stage that we only wanted the highest quality solutions for our Norwegian "safari" vehicles, we knew it couldn't get any better when we found the  lightweight fully insulated camper shells to instal on the truck bed, named "Gladiator".

The combination of the two gave us the solution we were looking for and was the perfect sustainable vehicle for any eco-conscious traveller. Travelling alone, as a romantic couple or together as a family of up to 5 people.
